Can someone explain the physics of this to me? Why does it project the eclipse and not just a dot?

We got 71% eclipse here in NYC, but the sky didn’t get much darker. Only about as dark as a cloudy day, but not quite as dark as a rainy day.

It was cool though watching hoards of people flock into the few street intersections that weren’t obscured by buildings.

Eclipse watching, science department level. We dug this out of the back of my prep room at the end of last year and made sure it worked.

Spoiler alert: the glasses were better for direct viewing but this was cool as we were able to see sunspots.
